State tax collection revenue misses forecast

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The state’s tax collections missed expectations in September, prompting Gov. Haley Barbour to send a message to lawmakers as they look to craft a budget for fiscal year 2012.

“The state’s preliminary revenue collections as of (Sept. 30) fell slightly below our conservative estimate for the fiscal year,” Barbour said in a statement. “September revenue was 1.26 percent, or $5.2 million, below expectations.

“As we begin planning for the FY 2012 budget, we must remember the global economy is not strong. Spending must be restrained in FY 2012 due to the loss of hundreds of millions of federal stimulus dollars and the fragile economic recovery.”
