Andrew Wiest, professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been named Charles W. Moorman Distinguished Alumni Professor in the Humanities.
The professorship is named after Moorman, an authority on the work of Geoffrey Chaucer and one of Wiest’s former professors. It is awarded for a two-year term to a senior professor in the USM departments of English, history, foreign languages, or philosophy.
Recipients receive financial support for research and must present a public lecture by the end of their term.
The university said Wiest plans to use funds provided by the professorship to complete research on an Army battalion’s campaign during the Vietnam War.
