County misses deadline for rescue boat grant

WARREN COUNTY — A new search-and-rescue boat for the Warren County Sheriff’s Department will have to wait until next year.

The Vicksburg Post reports the deadline has passed to match a state grant for a 25- to 30-foot speed boat, along the lines of what the Coast Guard uses.

Because of budget constraints, Sheriff Martin Pace says he’ll apply for the grant until next year.

The boat would have joined a 19-foot boat the sheriff’s department already uses for emergency response and patrol on the Mississippi River and inland lakes.

In the past, commercial boats in Ergon’s fleet and others already in the Mississippi River have responded to emergencies. The local Coast Guard vessel is tasked as a maintenance unit only.

Why can’t the U.S. Coast Guard Unit berthed in the harbor in Vicksburg respond to emergencies? Also what are they doing when maintenance is not going on I have seen personally the boat sitting for days on end doing nothing . Is this another waste of taxpayer dollars?
