Memorial surgeons named Fellows




Husband and wife surgeons Dr. Walter Surowiec, Memorial Hospital at Gulfport cardiothoracic surgeon, and Dr. Kristine Carter, Memorial general surgeon, recently became Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Surowiec received his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas, Health Science Center in Fort Worth. He completed his residency in general surgery at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. He completed fellowships in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and vascular surgery at the Carolinas Heart Institute in Charlotte, N.C. Prior to working at Memorial Hospital, he was with the LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport.
Surowiec is board certified in general, thoracic and vascular surgery.


Carter received her bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and completed her medical degree at LSU in Shreveport. Her general surgery residency was completed at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery and is board certified in general surgery.
