Proposed sign law in Clinton criticized

CLINTON — Clinton business owners are making it clear how they feel about a proposed city sign ordinance that restricts height and other characteristics of their best advertisement.

Jackson attorney James Peden told the Clinton Planning and Zoning Commission at a recent hearing, if the ordinance is adopted, the city would be shooting itself economically in the foot.

In the works for more than a year, the revised ordinance prohibits signs taller than 12 feet, making illegal dozens of signs throughout town.

The Clarion-Ledger reports the proposed ordinance contains no grandfather clause. Instead, it gives a time period to comply based on a sign’s cost.

City Community Development director Jerry Bounds says the goal is to decrease sign clutter and to make them more uniform.
