Rain brings needed relief to wheat farmers

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The recent soaking rains that fell on practically the entire state was welcome relief, especially for wheat farmers.

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Mississippi, there were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Nov. 7.

The moisture was great for wheat producers, who have been waiting for their seed to germinate.

“We received rain last weekend and the first part of this week. I expect wheat to be planted as producers can get in the field; everyone has been waiting on enough moisture to plant,” said Jimbo Burkhalter with the Extension Service in Tallahatchie County.

“Significant rainfall was received countywide for the first time since early May. This rain saved the day for those who planted wheat in hopes of rain,” said Strider McCrory with the Extension Service in Sunflower County.
