Taylor loses House seat after 21 years

JACKSON — Mississippi rarely kicks incumbents out of Congress. On Tuesday, voters defeated two.

Republican Steven Palazzo unseated 21-year Democratic incumbent Gene Taylor in the southern 4th Congressional District.

Republican Alan Nunnelee defeated Democratic Rep. Travis Childers in the northern 1st District. Childers had held the seat since May 2008.

Palazzo, of Biloxi, has been in the state House of Representatives since 2007. He portrayed Taylor as beholden to national Democratic leaders. Taylor, of Bay St. Louis, has been in Congress since 1989.

Mississippi’s other two congressmen – Democrat Bennie Thompson in the Delta-to-Jackson 2nd District and Republican Gregg Harper in the central 3rd – won Tuesday.
