120 Miss. teachers earn national certification

JACKSON — Another 120 Mississippi teachers have earned national board certification, making themselves eligible for pay bonuses of $6,000 a year.

Teachers go through a rigorous process of completing projects and passing exams to earn the certification. It’s a voluntary process that typically takes from one year to three years.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards says Mississippi ranks 16th nationwide in the number of new nationally certified teachers this year.

The group says Mississippi ranks eighth in the total number of master teachers overall, with 3,222.

The top five Mississippi districts with nationally certified teachers are Rankin County, Jackson, Madison County and DeSoto County.
