State's unemployment rate flirts with double-digits

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Mississippi’s unemployment rate climbed in November to 9.9 percent from 9.7 percent in October.

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, said Dec. 17 that the state — on a seasonally adjusted basis — had 3,600 more non-farm jobs last month than in Nov. 2009. The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Mississippi a year ago was 10.4 percent.

The number of unemployed Mississippi residents rose from 126,700 in October to 130,000 in November.

The civilian labor force jumped by 6,300 people last month. In recent months, there has been a national trend of previously discouraged unemployed returning to look actively for jobs.

The national jobless rate for November was 9.8 percent.
