TVA freezes pay of managers, specialists

NORTH MISSISSIPPI — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is freezing the base pay of about 3,500 managers and specialists until 2013.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press quotes TVA president Tom Kilgore, who said today the federal utility is joining the two-year pay freeze that Congress adopted for two million other federal employees.

Although TVA is a federal utility, it no longer receives direct government appropriations, so the move won’t save the government money.

Kilgore says it’s being done in the spirit of the pay freeze.

While the non-union workers at TVA won’t receive pay hikes, they will be eligible for performance-based bonuses. Those workers also just received a pay increase in the fall.

The freeze doesn’t apply to 8,600 union employees of the utility, who negotiate labor contracts with TVA.
