Horseshoe found liable for fatal accident

ROBINSONVILLE — Horseshoe Casino is liable for damages under the state’s “dram shop” law related to a fatal accident in Tunica County in 2002, the Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled.

However, the Supreme Court yesterday found the casino liable only 50 percent of the $1.1 million awarded by a Tunica County jury in 2010.

Three people died in the accident along U.S. 61.

Mississippi’s “dram shop” law allows business owners to be held liable if they serve alcohol to intoxicated patrons who later injure or kill others. According the court records, the motorist cited in the accident had been drinking at the casino before the wreck.

Horseshoe Casino is now owned by Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., which is not involved in the suit.
