Officials eyeing land for new city center

RIDGELAND — The City of Ridgeland will spend $4.6 million for 24.7 acres in the middle of town to build a new city center.

The Madison County Journal reports that aldermen voted 5-2 for the project along U.S. 51 near the police department and municipal court building.

Mayor Gene F. McGee says the site is perfect place for the relocation of city hall and several other departmental offices.

McGee says the next step is an environmental assessment.

After the land has been cleared, the design process for the municipal complex at the site can begin. City officials did not have a time frame on when the construction would begin.

McGee says the current city hall property would be declared surplus and sold.
