Senate committee to weigh Graves' nomination

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote tomorrow on the nomination of Mississippi Supreme Court Justice James E. Graves Jr. to a federal appeals court.

President Barack Obama resubmitted a batch of judicial nominations that didn’t clear the Senate last year to the committee, including Graves.

Graves nomination is among several the committee is scheduled to take up.

Obama nominated Graves last June to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals based in New Orleans. The court hears appeals from the federal courts in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

The 56-year-old Graves is currently the only black justice on the state Supreme Court, where he’s served since 2001.
