CO2 sequestration legislation signed into law

JACKSON — Gov. Haley Barbour has signed legislation designed to expand energy production and attract related investment and jobs in oil and natural gas production.

Senate Bill 2723 establishes standards by which the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Mississippi Oil and Gas Board will oversee and monitor geologic carbon dioxide sequestration, which is used in enhanced recovery of oil and natural gas.

“This is an important milestone for Mississippi’s energy sector,” Barbour said. “The Mississippi Power coal-fired generating plant in Kemper County will be the first commercial-scale carbon capture and sequestration project in the United States so it’s the right time to get this law on the books.”

The legislation was supported by the Mississippi Energy Policy Institute, a non-profit organization created by Barbour to explore ways to enhance the state’s energy offerings.
