GULFPORT — Gulfport wants three other Harrison County cities to join it in asking the Legislature to settle a dispute with Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann over who controls harbors along the Gulf Coast.
Hosemann contends the 1989 Public Tidelands Trust Act gives him authority over the harbors and the cities need to sign leases and share revenue with the state.
Gulfport contends that the Small Craft Harbor Act of 1972 gives cities control.
Slip fees and vendor leases at the small craft harbors in Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach and Pass Christian produce revenue for the cities. Hosemann insists the state should get a piece of the money.
WLOX-TV in Biloxi reports Pass Christian is the only city with a current lease.
