MEMA reports on preliminary damage assessment

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, as of March 10, had received preliminary damage reports from 23 counties due to severe weather that moved through the state March 8-9. So far, 147 residences are reported to be damaged or affected. Dozens of roads are damaged and destroyed.

Several counties are still experiencing flooding and damage assessments are ongoing, and The Salvation Army has set up a shelter in Jones County to aid flood victims there.

Initial damage reports by county are:

• Adams: Several roads affected by flooding and debris

• Claiborne: Five roads closed due to flooding

• Clarke: One home and three mobile homes major damage. Twenty-five homes and 10 mobile homes with minor damage. Five businesses with minor damage. Thirty roads and five bridges with minor damage. E-911 center and Quitman Junior High School with minor flooding damage

• Greene: One home major damage, two mobile homes with minor damage. Fourteen roads with major damage and 40 roads with minor damage

• Harrison: Numerous homes and mobile homes damaged

• Hinds: One home destroyed, one home major damage, eight homes and one mobile home minor damage. Three agricultural buildings destroyed and one with major damage

• Jasper: Two injuries. One home and one mobile home with minor damage. Five businesses minor damage. Ten roads with major damage, 30 roads with minor damage. Two bridges destroyed

• Jefferson: Several roads affected

• Jefferson-Davis: Several roads affected

• Jones: One home damaged, numerous roads affected

Lauderdale: Thirteen roads with major damage, seven roads with minor damage

Lee: One bridge with major damage

• Lincoln: Three roads with major damage, one road with minor damage

• Lowndes: Seventy homes in the Steens Area and Monsonic subdivisions are inaccessible due to flooded roads

• Newton: One mobile home destroyed. Two roads with minor damage. Levee breach on a lake one mile south of Decatur

• Panola: Flooding throughout county, damage to Beaver Dam road near Sardis Lake

• Pearl River: Several roads affected

• Pike: One farm building major damage. Eight roads and three bridges with minor damage

• Rankin: Five homes with minor damage, three roads affected

• Stone: Four homes damaged

• Wayne: Two homes, four mobile homes and four apartments affected. Three roads and two bridges with major damage. Five roads with minor damage. Roads still closed

• Wilkinson: Eight roads/culverts with major damage

• Yazoo: One death and one injury in Vaughan, roads closed
