Corps already at work strengthening levee system

ISSAQUENA COUNTY — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District (Corps) is working to strengthen a section of the main line Mississippi River levee system at Buck Chute near Eagle Lake.

A sand boil is when water seepage move materials under or through the levee during high water stages.

The work consists of clearing existing vegetation and constructing an earthen dike that will enclose an area to be filled with sand. This will reduce the water pressure on both sides of the levee and assist with the prevention of water seepage and materials shifting in and around the levee system.

The Vicksburg District, levee boards and local officials continue to closely monitor weather and river conditions. The Vicksburg District Emergency Operations Center is coordinating with the state emergency management agencies in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi concerning any necessary activities.
