Gaming Commission orders casinos to shut down

TUNICA — As the Mississippi River rises to near-record levels, Tunica’s nine casinos will shut down indefinitely, displacing about 10,000 workers and costing millions in lost dollars for the Delta community.

Larry Gregory, executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, issued closure orders yesterday to ensure the safety of visitors and workers. The casinos will close on a staggered schedule based on forecasted river levels affecting access to the properties.

Resorts Casino Tunica was the first to close today.

Gregory tells The Clarion-Ledger it’s likely the river levels will shut down casinos in Greenville, Vicksburg and Natchez.

As of yesterday, no closure orders had been issued for the south river region. The Gaming Commission will assess the area’s river levels next week.
