Jill Jackson, a physical scientist in U.S. Army Reachback Operations Center (UROC) at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, was named as the recipient of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) 2010 Tudor Medal. The award is given annually to the SAME Young Member who has made outstanding contributions to engineering, design, construction or planning for the previous three years.

According to her nomination packet, Jackson was eligible for the award due to “outstanding contributions in planning, executing and providing the best possible reachback and communication capability to deployed forces in support of military operations, natural disasters and other contingencies. She is the principal investigator in developing and integrating new technologies and recommends and verifies hardware and software changes for the Automated Route Reconnaissance Kit-Ground and Air Platforms, a means of communication for deployed troops. She also serves as the one of the UROC Code 4 supervisors and as training team lead.

Jackson joined the UROC in 2003, following a stint as a geographical information system research assistant at the Remote Sensing and Technology Center at Mississippi State University (MSU). She has a bachelor’s and a master’s, both in geology from MSU.  Jackson, who is currently serving as the junior vice president of the Vicksburg Post of SAME and has served as technical editor for the society’s The Military Engineer Magazine, will receive the award in a ceremony during the 2011 Joint Engineer Education and Training Conference and Expo, to be held in May in Grapevine, Texas.
