Barbour sets special election to fill Gordon's seat

NORTH MISSISSIPPI — Gov. Haley Barbour has set a Nov. 8 special election date to fill the unexpired term of the state Senate seat held by the late Sen. Jack Gordon.

The post represents District 8, which includes parts of Calhoun, Chickasaw, Grenada and Lee counties. The vacancy was created by Gordon’s death on May 7.

The qualifying deadline for the election will be Oct. 9. If a run-off is necessary, it will be Nov. 29. The winner will serve the remainder of the office’s term, through the end of 2011. The position will be on the ballot this year as part of the regular state election cycle.

  1. This is an unnecessary waste of state monies all in the name of giving certain individuals a political advantage.
