Physician blames attorneys for fraud conviction

JACKSON — A Jackson physician convicted in a $6.9-million healthcare fraud case is alleging her former attorney’s own legal problems may have kept him from providing effective representation during her April trial.

Dr. Cassandra Faye Thomas is awaiting sentencing in federal court.

The Clarion-Ledger reports she has fired her trial attorneys, Tom Freeland IV and his wife Joyce Freeland of Oxford, and has been granted a 90-day delay. U.S. District Judge Dan Jordan approved Thomas’ request for the delay because she has new attorneys — Robert Gibbs of Jackson and Karen Livingston-Wilson of Madison.

In court papers, Thomas said she had recently learned that prior to trial her defense attorneys at the time were involved in a confrontation, and that Tom Freeland was charged with trespassing and simple assault.
