State casinos report drop in winnings in March

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Winnings for Mississippi’s state-licensed casinos totaled $189.3 million in April, down from the $212.1 million in March, according to a report today from the state Revenue Department.

The casinos along the Gulf Coast took in $87.4 million in April, while the 19 casinos along the Mississippi River won $101.9 million from players.

The casinos took in $198.1 million in April 2010.

“Win” is a gross figure, with no operating costs or other expenses deducted. It is casino revenue only and doesn’t include hotel, restaurant or bar revenues generated by the resorts.

Casino revenues are reported on a calendar year basis.

Mississippi collects the gaming tax on a fiscal year that begins July 1 and end June 30. For the first 10 months of the fiscal year, gaming taxes have brought in $234.2 million, including $77.8 million that is transferred to local governments.

The Mississippi figures do not include Indian reservation casinos, which are not required to report their winnings to the public.
