City looking to resume public transit system

STARKVILLE — The City of Starkville is looking at reviving its public transit system.

The Commercial Dispatch reports the target date for getting the system operating is January 2013.

The system would service city residents and Mississippi State University.

Officials say a 10-member committee is collecting data for a grant application, which will be submitted to the Mississippi Department of Transportation in March of next year.

If the grant is awarded, officials say Starkville and MSU will have to provide 20 percent in matching funds, which could cost as much as $300,000.

The city had a bus system five years ago.

Officials say the new system will implement a to-be-determined fare and establish sheltered bus stops along the routes.
