City to use two contractors for flood debris cleanup

VICKSBURG — The City of Vicksburg will use two companies to remove debris left by receding floodwaters from the Mississippi River.

The Vicksburg Post reports the Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Tuesday authorized the city clerk to seek two proposals — one company to collect, remove and dispose of debris; and another for a company to oversee debris collection and disposal and ensure that it meets federal regulations.

Mayor Paul Winfield says he hopes to get the contracts awarded at the city board’s June 24 meeting.

Besides leaving debris, Winfield says the floodwaters also carried hazardous and toxic materials that need to be removed.

He says hiring a separate company to oversee debris collection will ensure the company collecting the waste is following FEMA guidelines.
