Crews raise fishing boat following fatal accident

GULFPORT — Omega Protein Inc.’s wrecked fishing boat Sandy Point has been salvaged from the Mississippi Sound and now sits in two pieces at the state port.

The Sun Herald reports contractor Inland Salvage Inc. finished bringing ashore the 163-foot boat yesterday. The Coast Guard says Inland cut the 163-foot boat in half to pull it from the water because it was too badly damaged to salvage in one piece.

The Sandy Point and the Eurus London, a 660-foot container ship outbound from the port with a load of bananas, collided the night of May 18. Three Omega employees died in the accident, while 13 others were rescued.

The Coast Guard plans to determine whether the Sandy Point suffered any mechanical or engine problems that contributed to the accident.
