Deer hunting season still on despite flood

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Deer hunting season in Mississippi is still on despite migration of deer during the Mississippi River flooding.

Wildlife officials say the floodwaters have displaced deer in the South Delta and the mainline Mississippi River levee system.

However, deer biologist Lann Wilf says history shows deer will escape to higher ground and follow receding water back to their home range.

Wilf says the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has been evaluating the situation along the Mississippi River and throughout the south Delta. He says once the water recedes, officers will be making site visits to properties along the river in order to determine the impacts of flooding on deer numbers.

Wilf says because floodwaters rose slowly, the deer had time to seek higher ground.
