Ex-supervisor gets time for Katrina-related bribery

HATTIESBURG — A federal judge has sentenced former Greene County Supervisor Earnest Holder to 6-1/2 years in prison for a bribery conviction.

U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett sentenced Holder yesterday in Hattiesburg.

Holder was convicted in April of bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, perjury before a grand jury and tax evasion.

The Hattiesburg American reports the charges were related to an illegal kickback scheme involving debris removal after Hurricane Katrina.

Holder also was ordered to pay $125,000 in fines and $18,480 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Starrett gave Holder credit on his fines for the $17,000 agents seized from Holder’s home during the investigation.

Holder was removed from office after conviction. The state auditor has demanded he pay $130,673.03 for defrauding Greene County.
