Fire at mill lands workers in Georgia burn center
GREENWOOD — Two workers injured in a fire at a mill in Greenwood earlier this week are hospitalized at a burn center in Georgia.
Fire Chief Marcus Banks tells the Greenwood Commonwealth that the incident occurred Monday night at the Delta Oil Mill. The mill processes distiller’s grain, a byproduct of ethanol production, and employs 25 workers.
Banks says a fire started inside a grain elevator pit around midnight Monday and workers Kendall Jasper and Terry Bates were trying to put it out with pressurized water extinguishers. He says the dust inside the bin caught fire.
Firefighters put out the fire.
Banks says the two workers were taken to the Augusta, Ga., burn center.
John Stewart, the mill manager, says officials are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
