Another Coast county extends burn ban

JACKSON COUNTY — Jackson County has extended a burn ban until July 18. The Board of Supervisors approved the extension yesterday.

The Mississippi Press reports the countywide burn bans include all cities and unincorporated county areas. During a ban, all outdoor burning — including barrel burning and campfires — is prohibited, and violations carry a minimum $500 fine.

Firefighters have battled two wildfires in the past few weeks. The first was in Ocean Springs on June 11, which burned 850 acres and the second was in Gautier on June 26, which burned 350 acres.

Despite recent rainfall, conditions are still very dry throughout south Mississippi. Last week, Harrison and Hancock counties also extended their burn ban through the end of the month.
