Audit finds ‘concern’ with county’s administration

HINDS COUNTY — Hinds County’s finances in fiscal 2010 reflect numerous areas of concern with how the county conducts business. That’s according to a private examination ordered by the state Auditor’s Office.

State Auditor Stacey Pickering noted the county ended the year with a $2-million deficit in its general fund and has routinely done interest rate swaps to ease the burden of about $47 million in bond debt.

The Clarion-Ledger reports the 65-page audit by BKD CPAs and Advisors cited dozens of areas for concern.

Supervisors George Smith 5 and Peggy Calhoun 3 say the economy and poor tax collections were to blame, and not runaway spending.

Pickering says other local governments are being scrutinized.
