City taking annexation plan to Supreme Court

GULFPORT — The City of Gulfport is going to the Mississippi Supreme Court to get approval for its proposed annexation.

In June, a Harrison County judge dismissed Gulfport’s petition to annex 2.5 square miles of Harrison County.

Attorney Jerry Mills of Jackson tells The Sun Herald the appeal was filed to meet a legal deadline. He says he hopes negotiations between Gulfport and Biloxi will make it unnecessary.

Biloxi and Gulfport have been battling over the same territory for several years, especially along the new Mississippi Highway 605 corridor. Harrison County has also opposed the annexation.

Biloxi is scheduled to go to court this fall to annex much of the same territory around Highway 605. Gulfport and Harrison County are opposing the annexation.
