HATTIESBURG — A judge has scheduled a hearing today in Hattiesburg to discuss a proposal for division of a $1-million settlement reached in a lawsuit stemming from the 2004 collapse of Big Bay Lake Dam.
The Hattiesburg American reports Circuit Judge Tony Mozingo will hear from a court-appointed “special master” charged with recommending how to split the money among 105 victims.
The settlement was reached in 2010 between attorneys for the plaintiffs and Land Partners Limited Partnership and Big Bay Lake Inc.
Proceeds from the settlement to the plaintiffs, whose property was damaged or destroyed when the earthen dam broke in March 2004, will be disbursed based on the amount of damage they suffered.
Nine people included in the suit received no money because their claims could not be verified.
