Toyota: Work remains on Blue Springs plant

BLUE SPRINGS — Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi isn’t quite ready to produce the world’s best-selling sedan yet at its Blue Springs plant.

Company spokeswoman Emily Holland tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that work still needs to be completed inside the plant, and the company needs more workers.

Nonetheless, Holland says the construction is going well and the first Mississippi-built Corolla should come off the assembly line in the fall.

The factory now employs some 840 employees. Holland says with Toyota facilities in the middle of their traditional mid-year break, another batch of employees isn’t starting until July 18.

Officials have said the plant will employ about 2,000 workers at full capacity when it can produce 150,000 vehicles a year. Suppliers will employ an additional 2,000 workers.
