Raju named AVF president

Seshadri Raju, MD, FACS, a vascular surgeon at River Oaks Hospital and founder of the Rane Center for Venous and Lymphatic Diseases at River Oaks, has been named president of the American Venous Forum (AVF).

Raju is a founding member of the AVF who has been a prolific contributor to the scientific programs of the organization. He is widely published, many of them in the Journal of Vascular Surgery. He was the recipient of the Founders’ Award from the AVF in recognition of his scientific contributions. This year the society decided to honor him again by elevating him as the President of the society.

Raju received a doctor of medicine degree from Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, followed by a five-year surgical residency and certification. After immigrating to the United States, he completed additional general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery residencies at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), receiving board certification in those specialties. He also holds board certification in vascular surgery.

Raju was subsequently appointed to the UMMC faculty, rapidly rising to the rank of full professor. Raju performed the first clinically successful single lung as well double lung transplant surgeries in the U.S. Successful heart and liver transplants – two firsts in Mississippi and the Southeast – soon followed. A successful double lung transplant by Raju made national news resulting in formal citations by the U.S. Congress.

Raju retired from UMMC as emeritus professor of surgery and honorary surgeon after 27 years of service to enter private practice. In 1993, Raju joined the River Oaks Hospital specializing in the treatment of venous and lymphatic diseases.

Raju is a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also member of numerous national and international specialty societies in transplantation, vascular surgery and phlebology. Raju currently serves on the boards of River Oaks Hospital and Woman’s Hospital. He has authored over 250 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, book chapters in many vascular surgery textbooks and a book on venous surgery. He has been a guest speaker at numerous professional forums in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Raju often has visiting physicians from the USA and abroad observing his venous interventions. He has been the featured speaker at several named lectureships.
