JACKSON COUNTY — The head of the Mississippi Development Authority says Jackson County needs to do more to attract new residents and businesses.
Leland Speed went so far yesterday as to tell a gathering of 100 community leaders that they have gotten “a little lazy”
WLOX TV reports that Speed later pointed to thousands of good jobs at Ingalls Shipbuilding as a big plus for the area, but he said too many of those workers don’t live in Jackson County.
Speed said U.S. 90 needs to be redeveloped into a first-class thoroughfare. And he said the county needs more retail businesses and hotels.
Some questioned whether “lazy” was a fair description. George Freeland, of the Jackson County Economic Development Authority, said the community is focused and intelligent.
