Commission to mull plans for Gulfport harbor resort

GULFPORT — The Gulfport Redevelopment Commission will consider plans to bring a 12-suite resort and restaurant to the Gulfport harbor.

The City Council voted unanimously yesterday to convey a piece of property at the harbor to the Redevelopment Commission in anticipation of approving a 15-year lease with Saltgrass Outdoors for the $2.5-million project.

Buy-back provisions in the lease would allow for the city to purchase the infrastructure at the harbor if desired at the time of the lease renewal. After the 15-year term, Mayor George Schloegel tells The Sun Herald Saltgrass Outdoors would be offered 10-year lease renewals.

Saltgrass Outdoors operating partner Josh Schmitt says the project is expected to bring in $75,000 to $90,000 a year in sales tax. The company operates a similar resort in Venice, La.
