Biglanes sentenced for attempted bribery of Brown

LAUREL — A father and son from Laurel who pleaded guilty to trying to bribe Mississippi’s transportation director have been sentenced in the case.

U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate sentenced 67-year-old Kenneth Biglane to two years in prison and his 40-year-old son, Peter Biglane, to 18 months for bribery relating to a program which receives benefits under federal programs providing assistance to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Wingate also fined the men — nearly $50,000 and more than $35,000 respectively.

Federal prosecutors say Kenneth Biglane in May 2009 offered Larry “Butch” Brown, MDOT’s then executive director, 25 percent kickbacks on all right of way contracts to his son’s company, OxPatch Resources, LLC. Brown called authorities, which led to the Biglanes’ indictment.

The men are to report to prison Dec. 5.
