DNC Chairman: Dupree "Tremendous Source of Pride" for Democratic Party

Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is wrapping a two-day visit to Mississippi to show support for Hattiesburg mayor Johnny Dupree’s bid for the Governor’s Mansion. The Florida congresswoman praised Dupree’s job creation record and said that as governor Dupree would “move the needle” and take Mississippi from last to first.

“We both want the same thing for America’s families and Mississippi’s families,” Schultz said. “We want a government that is going to make sure that the middle class and working families can get a fair shake.”

Schultz said that Dupree’s ability to secure his party’s nomination as the first African-American candidate for governor was a “tremendous source of pride” for the Democratic Party. “Even in Mississippi, that racial divide has begun to wane. Johnny Dupree won the nomination because Democrats black and white understood that he would be Mississippi’s best foot forward,” she said.

“Mississippians want a governor that is going to fight for them. Small business owners want someone in the state capitol who’s gonna roll up their sleeves and fight hard for them and not just sit back and coast and think that everything is just fine the way it is,” Schultz added.

“There are people out there that have good hearts and they want Mississippians to live a better life,” Dupree said. “(Rep. Schulz) came here to just say that, that we’re with you.”

Johnny Dupree faces Republican lieutenant governor Phil Bryant in the general election on November 8.
