Keeping Our Eye On Sandy Sanford

“Keeping Our Eye On” is a continuing online series highlighting young professionals (under 40) in Mississippi. If you would like to be featured in this series please contact Stephen McDill at stephen.mcdill@msbusiness.com.

Gordon “Sandy” Sanford, III

Sandy Sanford says he has always had an interest in solving problems. “When you’re a lawyer a lot of time you’re resolving disputes,” he says. “In lobbying you have to be more involved in the company’s goal and mission. You’re really looking to help them with their whole business purpose.”

Sanford says lobbyists can’t be reactionary but have to stay ahead of issues that would impact their clients. One case involving the Mississippi 811 (“Call before you dig.”) organization had him focusing on everything from construction law to how to make utilities safe for the public. “Somebody hits one gas line with a back hoe and you have a huge safety issue,” Sanford says. “Most people would agree there’s an inadequate enforcement of our excavation laws.”

The Pascagoula native attended Ole Miss where he was president of the student body and a member of Sigma Nu. After a short stint in accounting, Sanford attended Mississippi College School of Law where he graduated first in his class and was chief editor of the law review.

Prior to working for Adams & Reese, Sanford was employed as a lobbyist with the Willoughby Law Group. He was also legal counsel to AT&T Mississippi for seven years.

Sanford believes up-and-coming attorneys will be successful when they invest their mind and heart into the client. “You have to go all in,” he says. “You only have one shot at a good reputation and to be trustworthy and have integrity. It’s just not worth it taking shortcuts in those departments.”

Sanford has served as an adjunct professor at MC Law and is an active member of the Mississippi Bar Association and the Mississippi Corporate Counsel Association.

Sanford spends most of his leisure time coaching little league sports and spending time with his wife and four children.
