A special ceremony was held Sept. 30 to honor longtime employee Steve Lofton at the Engineer Research and Development Center’s Structural Maintenance Branch (SMB). Lofton, a structural engineer and 11-year employee of the SMB team, passed away in October 2010 at the age of 43 from an unexpected illness.
During the ceremony, ERDC Commander Col. Kevin Wilson presented the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service to Lofton’s wife, Sharon.
During the ceremony, Lofton was also honored by the renaming of the SMB Conference Room to the “Steve Lofton Conference Room”.
Lofton’s research throughout his career impacted many areas in the science of dynamic effects on structures. His work included Munitions Effectiveness Assessment models, building and window design and blast research and model development. Many of his efforts helped develop new and improved structural designs to protect against terrorist attacks around the world.
The internationally-renowned structural engineer held a master’s from Mississippi State University and was a doctoral candidate at Texas A & M University.
