Officials oppose MDEQ's proposed water regulations

PEARL RIVER COUNTY — Pearl River County supervisors have unanimously adopted a resolution opposing proposed Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality amendments to state water regulations.

The Mississippi Rural Water Association charges the proposed changes would give MDEQ the power to deny permits covering proposed water wells and cancel existing well permits. In some cases, it would force consolidation of rural water associations, and even with city water systems, if the MDEQ deems it advantageous economically.

The Picayune Item reports the supervisors’ resolution brings the board in line with the anti-amendment stance of the rural water associations across the South Mississippi six-county area, which includes Pearl River, Harrison, Hancock, George, Stone and Jackson counties.
