Renaming airport could cost up to $150K

JACKSON — What is a name worth? Possibly $100,000 to $150,000.

That is how much it is expected to cost the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority to replace signage and other materials in changing the name of the Jackson-Evers International Airport to the Jackson Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.

The Jackson City Council this month approved the renaming, which backers say is needed to properly memorialize the slain civil rights leader.

But the airport authority must sign off on the change, too, before it is official. A vote is expected at the authority’s November meeting.

Once the approval is made, airport CEO Dirk Vanderleest tells The Clarion-Ledger, it will take several months to make all the needed changes, which they have already started cataloguing.

  1. This is just so stupid! But I can’t say I’m surprized by it. Jackson does really, really stupid things that make no sense what so ever! The city’s infrastructure is literally falling apart and they can pass a vote to change the name of the airport YET AGAIN! Just further justification that I did the right thing by getting out of Jackson.

  2. It seems to me that Mr. Evers has (deservedly) been memorialized enough and that the council should have thought of this clarification the first time they changed the name of the airport. I’ll bet if you could ask Mr. Evers if he thinks this is a good use of funds that he would say No! The City Council needs to get their priorities straight in these bad economic times and save that idea for more prosperous ones.

  3. None of the above people helped with air, space or aeronotical progress. Why not leave this catagory to someone that better deserves it. There are numerous other places and things that already have their names all over them. SHAME / SHAME / SHAME/ ON THE JACKSON CITY COUNCIL. THE MONEY SPENT HERE IS DESPERTELY NEEDED RIGHT HERE IN JACKSON. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK OUT THE WINDOW OR RIDE DOWN THE STREET…………..

  4. What in the world is going on? There is so much more that needs to be done.
Some how the people of Mississippi and around the world are missing the cues.

There may have been a time when we could afford to spend money as if it doesn’t
matter. I think we have let those days slip away. Our state and our country have major economic problems that are getting worse by the day. Spending money like an
adolescent with a credit card helped to cause our current problems. If we don’t learn
from our mistakes we are doomed to repeat them. Please reconsider this action.
