Aldermen approve plans for proposed entertainment district

CORINTH — The city of Corinth could become another town in Mississippi to have a designated Arts and Entertainment District.

The Daily Corinthian reports aldermen agreed last week to prepare a legal description of the district for the state to review. Aldermen hope to approve a final plan in January.

The program allows a local government to create an entertainment district in which businesses that sell tickets can get tax breaks for new or renovated venues. The venue would depreciate in five years compared to the normal 40 years.

The participating businesses must add a $2 fee to their tickets for five years.

Tourism director Kristy White said two separate areas are proposed to become entertainment districts — one, generally the historic business, and the other some open property in the Crossroads Arena area.

White said the arena and downtown areas would likely have two different types of marketing plans.

“We have a lot of visitors who want to walk around downtown at night,” she said. “They actually want to stay downtown. There are some opportunities in that area to revitalize some of the buildings.”
