OXFORD — The April 27 storms that slashed across Lafayette County have cost the county $1.4 million, according to county administrator Joseph Johnson.

Johnson tells the Oxford Eagle that figure includes contractor work for debris removal.

A tornado tore apart at least 18 homes in the Pine Flat community in Lafayette County, but no one was killed or seriously injured. One man died when his 18-wheeler hit a downed tree and flipped over on Mississippi Highway 30. Homes were damaged in Yocona and along Highway 6 East.

Straight-line winds ripped up dozens of roofs in the Northpointe subdivision, damaged several businesses in the Lafayette County Industrial Park and damaged about 100 apartments.

According to FEMA, it has approved $171,000 in assistance for 191 families in Lafayette County. Housing assistance totaled $146,000.
