OXFORD — The city of Oxford has accepted a $61,258 federal grant to start a local farmers’ market.
The Oxford Eagle reports the grant came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
City grant writer Lynn Wilkins says Oxford has been deemed a food desert by the USDA, which means low-income families in the community face substantial barriers in getting fresh local produce.
The market is still in early planning stages, but Oxford Parks Commission director Rob Boyd would like to see it begin in May of next year. A specific time has not been determined.
The OPC got into growing fresh fruits and vegetables last year with the community garden. The farmers’ market would be located near the garden.
Boyd plans to have more details for aldermen in December.
