Hurricane researchers to study Katrina’s ‘ground zero’

WAVELAND — Researchers plan to use the hurricane experiences of residents in two Gulf Coast towns to help other communities prepare for the economic effects of disasters.

Matt Fannin, associate professor with the Louisiana State University Center for Rural Studies, says the two-year study will start in early 2012 and focus on Foley, Ala., and Waveland.

Researchers tell the Press-Register the study is aimed at helping communities throughout the Gulf Coast.

Fannin says researchers plan to compile a report that shows how often a community can expect to be hit by a major storm and what percentage of its annual revenue should be put aside to be ready for that impact.

The Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center is working with LSU on the study.
