Tension mounts between demonstrators and police at Occupy Jackson

Nerves were raw at last night’s meeting of Jackson’s mini version of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Freezing demonstrators huddled in front of TV cameras on the corner of Congress and Amite streets and listened to lawyers from the ACLU. JPD cruisers passed by every ten minutes or so- lights off but still signaling their presence.

This morning, Occupy Jackson’s reign over Smith Park seems to be over. The tents are gone as are most of the signs. Lower temperatures plus the reality of jobs and school for many of the demonstrators has put a chill on threats of civil disobedience. The authorities have reduced their real estate to a sidewalk.

Tuesday’s City Council meeting will shed more light on whether the movement has any future in downtown Jackson or if their angst-ridden days of spray paint, direct responses and Halloween masks are numbered.

Stay tuned.
