TUPELO — The city of Tupelo has been waiting for the opportunity to bring the city’s police department under one roof instead of having detectives and patrol officers work out of different buildings.
City attorney John Hill said the federal government is ready to hand over to Tupelo the old Milam Manufacturing building.
The building was seized several years ago in a high-profile contraband cigarette bust.
Once the government turns this land over to the city, Mayor Jack Reed Jr. said the city would then tear the building down, clear the lot and begin construction on the new police department.
A bond issue in 2007 allocated $4 million for a new station.
