Gulfport man gets prison for grant theft

GULFPORT — A Gulfport man has been sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay more than $118,000 for the theft of government funds intended as homeowner-assistance and disaster-relief for Hurricane Katrina survivors.
U.S. District Court Judge Sul Ozerden on Friday ruled Gerald W. Haydel must make restitution of $115,229 and pay a $3,000 fine.
The judge also sentenced Haydel to three years of probation, to include five months of home confinement.
Haydel pleaded guilty in September, admitting a grant he received after Katrina was for a rental property he owned — not his primary residence.
Haydel’s brother, Michael D. Haydel, pleaded guilty on a lesser charge in September. Michael Haydel is set for sentencing Wednesday.
