JACKSON — Mississippi’s capital city may have to reimburse more than $300,000 to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development over lax oversight that led to the misuse of more than $1 million in federal grants over several years.
The reimbursement may be necessary for Jackson to get $1.15 million in housing funding restored.
The Clarion-Ledger obtained a HUD monitoring report that found that lax oversight of federal HOME grant money over several years at housing projects that are at risk of failing.
The city has until Jan. 31 to file a corrective action plan with HUD, but it could take several months for HUD to unfreeze the funding.
